The route: Budapest’s landmarks from the Danube

The Danube is the heart of Budapest, and a river cruise is the most relaxing way to see the city’s most famous sights in a single hour. From the deck of the boat, Buda with its castle hill rises on one bank and Pest with its grand boulevards and the Parliament stretches along the other. The whole Danube panorama between the bridges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our sightseeing cruise starts in the city centre at Vigadó tér, sails north past the Parliament towards Margaret Island, turns and follows the Buda bank south to Gellért Hill and the Liberty Bridge before returning to the pier. Here is what you will see on your Budapest Danube cruise.

Vigadó Square and the Pesti Vigadó 1
Pest bank

Vigadó Square and the Pesti Vigadó

Your Danube cruise begins at Pier 7 on Vigadó tér, one of the most elegant squares on the Pest embankment. Behind the pier stands the Pesti Vigadó, a romantic concert hall from 1865 where Liszt and Brahms once performed. From here you already enjoy a perfect view across the river to Buda Castle, so have your camera ready while you board and collect your welcome drink.

Széchenyi Chain Bridge 2
On the river

Széchenyi Chain Bridge

Opened in 1849, the Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary and the symbol of the union of Buda and Pest. Its stone lions and triumphal arches look especially impressive from river level. After a complete renovation the bridge shines again, and at night thousands of lights trace the line of its chains – one of the most photographed moments of every Budapest night cruise.

Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Gresham Palace 3
Pest bank

Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Gresham Palace

At the Pest end of the Chain Bridge you pass two architectural jewels. The neo-Renaissance palace of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was founded thanks to Count István Széchenyi, the same visionary behind the bridge. Next to it, the Art Nouveau Gresham Palace, today the Four Seasons hotel, is famous for its peacock gates and its richly decorated façade facing the river.

Hungarian Parliament Building 4
Pest bank

Hungarian Parliament Building

The highlight of every Danube boat tour in Budapest. The Hungarian Parliament is the largest building in the country and one of the most beautiful parliaments in the world, with a 96-metre dome, 691 rooms and a façade almost 270 metres long. Seen from the water you appreciate its full neo-Gothic silhouette, and after sunset the golden illumination reflected in the Danube is simply unforgettable.

Shoes on the Danube Bank 5
Pest bank

Shoes on the Danube Bank

South of the Parliament, sixty pairs of iron shoes line the stone embankment. This moving memorial commemorates the Jewish victims who were shot into the river in 1944–45. From the boat the quiet row of shoes is a powerful reminder of the city’s history, and many guests take a moment of silence as the cruise glides past.

6 Buda bank

Batthyány Square and St Anne’s Church

Directly opposite the Parliament, on the Buda side, lies Batthyány tér with the twin towers of the Baroque St Anne’s Church. This is the classic viewpoint from which postcards of the Parliament are taken – and from the river you get both views at once: the Parliament on one side, the colourful Buda riverfront and the Castle District on the other.

Margaret Bridge and Margaret Island 7
On the river

Margaret Bridge and Margaret Island

The northern turning point of the cruise. Margaret Bridge, with its unusual angled shape, connects both banks with the southern tip of Margaret Island, a car-free green oasis of parks, gardens and fountains in the middle of the Danube. As the boat turns here, you get a wide panoramic view back over the Parliament and the Buda hills.

Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church 8
Buda bank

Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church

High above the Buda bank, the white fairy-tale towers of the Fisherman’s Bastion appear between the trees. The seven towers symbolise the seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary. Right behind them rises the slender spire and the colourful Zsolnay tile roof of Matthias Church, where Hungarian kings were crowned. From the Danube you see how the Castle District crowns the whole hillside.

Buda Castle Royal Palace 9
Buda bank

Buda Castle Royal Palace

The vast Royal Palace with its green dome dominates the southern part of Castle Hill. For centuries it was the seat of Hungarian kings; today it houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Below the palace you can spot the Castle Garden Bazaar and the funicular that has climbed the hill since 1870. Illuminated at night, Buda Castle is one of the most spectacular sights of a Budapest evening cruise.

10 On the river

Elisabeth Bridge

The slender white Elisabeth Bridge is named after Queen Elisabeth of Hungary, the much-loved “Sisi”, whose statue stands in a small garden at its Buda end. Its elegant suspension design spans the narrowest point of the Danube in Budapest and leads the eye straight up to Gellért Hill.

Gellért Hill, the Citadel and the Liberty Statue 11
Buda bank

Gellért Hill, the Citadel and the Liberty Statue

At 235 metres, Gellért Hill offers the best panorama of Budapest. On its summit stand the Citadel and the Liberty Statue, a woman holding a palm leaf that can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. On the rocky slope facing the river is the statue of Saint Gellért, and at the foot of the hill you will notice the Cave Church carved into the rock.

Liberty Bridge and Gellért Baths 12
On the river

Liberty Bridge and Gellért Baths

The green Liberty Bridge is perhaps the most charming bridge in Budapest, decorated with mythical Turul birds on top of its pillars. At its Buda end stands the Art Nouveau Gellért Hotel and Thermal Bath, one of the city’s famous spa buildings. This is the southern turning area of the cruise, with beautiful views in both directions along the river.

13 Pest bank

Central Market Hall and Corvinus University

On the Pest side of the Liberty Bridge you can see the colourful Zsolnay roof of the Great Market Hall, the largest indoor market in Budapest, and the neo-Renaissance building of Corvinus University, originally built as the main customs house on the Danube. Further south, the modern glass “Whale” (Bálna) shows Budapest’s contemporary side.

14 On the river

Return along the Pest embankment

On the way back to Vigadó tér the boat follows the Pest bank, past the elegant hotels of the Danube Promenade and the bronze Little Princess statue on the tram line railing. It is the perfect moment to finish your drink, take the last photos of Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge, and enjoy the city slowly gliding by.

The exact route may vary slightly depending on the water level and river traffic.
